If you don't love yourself, how can you expect someone else to love you the right way? When you love yourself, you place a certain value on yourself and you create a standard for how you deserve to be treated. When you love yourself enough to uphold that standard you won't allow anyone one in you life who doesn't respect it.
I love me enough to know!
When self-love is lacking, a person is more inclined to find something (someone) else to fill that void. The problem with this is that there isn't a standard attached to what they are looking for. So, though they may get lucky and find something good, there is also the risk of them finding something very bad.
Love of self is accompanied by self-respect, and a sense of self-worth. Two things that help you set and maintain a standard for the type of people you allow into your life. Without these two things, the only thing you can expect from someone else is presence. The fact that they are there becomes enough for you, regardless of what their intentions are. Love yourself enough to know what you deserve, and don't accept anything less. People can only follow your example on how to love you, and if your example on how to love you isn't right, then you share the responsibility for how things develop.
The other side to loving yourself is what it enables you to give. Not only do you gain the ability to receive love the way you want, but you also gain the ability to give it according to those same standards.
Self-love can be lost in a multitude of ways. Only you can trace it back to its root by referencing things that occurred during your childhood, or past relationships that you've been in. I just need you to know this... regardless of what has happened in your life, yes, you are still worthy! It may be easier said then done, but you have the ability to reclaim your self-love. You don't have to accept your past pains as today's ongoing reality. If you can't do it by yourself, know there are avenues that can help you with this.
